DIGBETH HS2 - DESIGN THEORY

For the project we were asked to create a design for the landscape adjacent to the new HS2 Station planned to the north of Digbeth. We were tasked with identifying spatial principles from a Rothko painting, and then to progress these principles through to a final design.

Our brief was entitled Pose, Promenade and Contemplation, exploring how these ideas worked in space and how they could be interpreted through our designs. From my painting ‘Blue, Green and Brown’ I distilled the spatial principles of Separation and Shading, from which I was able to develop my concepts and create my final design. In addition to the brief, we were also tasked with incorporating one of the recently published Sustainable Development Goals. For this I chose  SDG 1 - No Poverty, aiming to ensure that my design was accessible for the poorer community and positively contributed to this goal.
