REDISCOVERING FAIRBOURNE

My design thesis project was set in Fairbourne and focussed on the impacts of climate change and flooding with Fairbourne, as the first village in the UK to be decommissioned as the direct result of the changing climate. For my project I wanted to design an eco-tourism site that not only positively contributed to the issues facing the area, but that also created a new destination for both people and wildlife within the existing landscape. To do this I came up with the concept of harness, conserve, create. Harnessing natural features and constraints, conserving the existing landscape character and unique sense of place, and creating a new space to draw visitors and encourage discovery of the natural landscape.

To aid my design and analysis I used a series of maps, spatial strategies and principles to analyse and interrogate the existing landscape and sense of place, as well as to define a key set of design principles. In doing so I was able to ensure that my design not only met with my proposed concepts, but also that I had a clear methodology and progression.  To aid and help illustrate my final design, I produced a number of visuals and a 3D printed model of the proposed pavilion space to showcase more accessibly my design thinking and intentions.
